In Memoriam

On Oct. 8, 2000, Erwin Angres, M.D., passed away at the age of 89.

Angres was born in 1911 in Beuthen, Germany (now part of Poland). After studying both medicine and art at the University of Heidelberg, Breslau University and the University of Leipzig, he graduated from the University of Leipzig with a medical degree in 1936. The next year, he completed his surgical residency in Berlin.

Immigrating first to Denmark in 1937, Angres came to the United States in 1938. He underwent an American internship and state board examinations in order to pass the Illinois State Board of Medicine in 1939. He followed this with psychiatric residencies in Illinois.

Angres went on to study under N. Lionel Blitzsten and Theresa Benedek, completing his psychoanalytic training in 1963. From 1965 to 1975, he served as special consultant to the German Consul General in Chicago, mostly examining survivors of Nazi concentration camps. Angres moved to La Jolla, Calif., in 1976 and continued his practice there for over 20 years.

Angres was a life fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and a lifetime member of both the American Medical Association and the Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute-EAD
