In the clinical ecosystem, there are very important suggestions offered by the collection of data sets (discussed in Part 1 of this 2-part series).
The first is that it is absolutely essential that every person who has bipolar disorder be screened for risk factors related to metabolic syndrome and diabetes and traditional risk factors like overweight and eating habits. We are also beginning to consider emerging risk factors like co-inflammation and behavior that promotes inflammation.
Here to talk about these issues is Roger McIntyre, MD, Professor of Psychiatry and Pharmacology and Head of the Mood Disorders Psychopharmacology Unit at the University of Toronto. He is a speaker at this year's PsychCongress in a presentation titled "Bipolar Disorder and Medical Comorbidity: Research and Treatment Implications."
