A Tribute to Max Fink, MD

When Dr Max Fink accepts the Thomas W. Salmon Award from the New York Academy of Medicine on November 29, 2011, he will join Adolf Meyer, Karl Menninger, John Bowlby, Julius Axelrod, and other psychiatric luminaries who have received the award in recognition of their outstanding contributions in psychiatry and neurology.

“Dr Fink was chosen because of his immense service to medicine and psychiatry,” said Robert Michaels, MD, Professor and former Chairman of Psychiatry and Dean of Medicine at Cornell University, and Chairman of the Salmon Award Selection Committee. “Max Fink has had an extraordinary career, promoting high-quality science based on empirical research and focused on patient treatment. He has been a mentor to major researchers who have gone on to make significant contributions of their own. He has published hundreds of original papers and a dozen books.”

Dr Fink served on the editorial board of Psychiatric Times from 2002 to 2009 and was a regular contributor for many years. In an editorial thanking Dr Fink for his years of service, then Editor in Chief, Ronald Pies, MD, wrote: “We cannot do justice, in this short space, to the richness and depth of Dr Fink’s contributions to psychiatry. Much more on his remarkable career is available in a 2005 interview.1 We wish to express our deep gratitude to Dr Fink for his many contributions, his invaluable teaching, and his unflagging collegial support these many years.”
