In this video, Julian Lagoy, MD, talks about National Depression Education and Awareness Month and National Depression Screening Day, October 8.
He briefly explains the epidemiology and impact of depression both worldwide and in the United States and describes how he screens for and treat depression. Also discussed are common screening tools such as the PHQ-9 and Beck Depression Inventory.
Dr Lagoy speaks to the prevalence and probability of treatment-resistant depression and the different options for treatment. He describes the process of switching a medication versus his rationale for adding an adjunctive medication. Lastly, he briefly mentions other alternative non-medication treatments for depression if medications fail.
